Identity threat detection and response

Detect stolen credentials, privilege escalation and directory attacks that bypass endpoint and network controls.

The problem

“We need to know when an account is being abused.”

Attackers prefer valid credentials because they blend into normal traffic. A successful login with the right password is rarely flagged by perimeter tools.

Directory services and privileged accounts are central to almost every large intrusion, yet they are often monitored less closely than servers.

Proposed approach

  1. Step 1

    Map privileged and service accounts

Discover which accounts hold elevated rights, who owns them and which are unused. Reduce standing access before adding detection on top.

  2. Step 2

    Monitor authentication and directory activity

Feed sign-in logs and directory events into a detection tool that understands identity techniques, such as unusual privilege changes or credential replay.

  3. Step 3

    Connect detections to account response

Decide what happens on a high-confidence alert: force a re-authentication, disable the account, or open an incident. Rehearse it.

Implementation considerations

  • Which directory and sign-in sources are in scope, including hybrid and cloud identity
  • Coverage of domain controllers and the network path to them
  • Ownership of service accounts before automated action is enabled
  • Alignment with the access review process

Expected operational benefits

  • Earlier warning of account takeover
  • Fewer standing privileges to maintain and justify
  • Identity events included in incident timelines
