What a scanner does well
A vulnerability scanner compares systems against a database of known software weaknesses and reports what it finds. It is essential, repeatable and well understood.
Where lists fall short
A raw list does not say which issues are reachable from the internet, which sit on critical systems, or which are being exploited in the wild. It also only covers assets that were in scope for the scan.
What exposure management adds
Exposure management combines discovery, scanning, configuration data and context to rank what to fix.
- Discovery of assets that were not in the inventory.
- Context such as internet exposure and asset criticality.
- Tracking of ownership and ageing through to closure.
Choosing where to invest
If you do not scan regularly today, start there. If scans already run but the backlog never shrinks, the missing piece is usually prioritisation and ownership, not more scanning.
